missing in action

Congratulations to the half million or so citizen-viewers who made it to Washington DC on Saturday to demand an end to the occupation of Iraq and to reject the escalation in troops.

As the Washington Post reported on Thursday, “Among the featured speakers will be Vietnam War-era protester Jane Fonda, according to the organizers. Others include actors Danny Glover, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, and Carlos Arredondo, who in 2004 set himself on fire after learning of the death in Iraq of his Marine Corps son, Alexander.”

The people missing from this list included Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama … hey! What do they all have in common? Yes, the Democrats who are now running Congress and running for president chose not to associate themselves with the majority of Americans who want to get US troops out of Iraq pronto.

The exception among the announced candidates was Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who was on the speakers list along with Representatives Conyers, Waters and Woolsey. Why they are still Democrats is a mystery.
