DSM: Savor the meltdown
I know that we’ve got a lot of work cut out for us as non-Republicans (Dems and those with the sanity to have jumped ship on Bush). It will be a hard slog, a lot of uphill fighting, plenty of intramural arguing. It’s enough to get me down just thinking about it.
For the moment, however, please stop, listen and enjoy the sweet sounds of the implosion going on over at Mordor where Sauron and his evil minions are flailing madly to stave off what is now certain death.
There’s too much to link to on their collapse. For a few hints of the panic on the far side of Middle Earth, this on Palin wanting to “go rogue” and lashing out at her handlers should give you a taste. Or maybe this campaign’s Gollum saying that “oh no, he doesn’t wants the preciousss, he really likeses Hobbits!”
This Democratic landslide has been a long time coming. In my 43 years that means it’s been my entire lifetime coming (1992 which wasn’t that hot; the Dems actually lost 9 seats in the House and gained only 1 in the Senate).
Meanwhile, we’ve been subjected to conservative triumphalism each election cycle. They are the “real” Americans (a line trotted out this year that finally was met with scorn and derision), the “normal” ones. Dems are a small pack of deranged, abnormal losers.
And for those saying don’t gloat, be the bigger party, I say be human. Be true to your emotions. It will make you feel loads better and it’s good politics.
Nothing sprays weed killer on the right’s popular appeal like spreading the word that they are uncool, fringe losers. Mockery and scorn de-legitimizes the loudmouth wing of the Republican party—Coulter, Malkin, O’Reilly, Fox, Limbaugh etc—whereas saying there’s reason on all sides only rehabs them for the next time around.
Even if Obama is the bigger Aragon in this part IV of Lord of the Rings, I say take pleasure hobbits, Munchkins, and all good little people of the realm! Take pleasure in their downfall.
