…lazy citizen-viewer lets Mitch Benn do the work.
desperate times
Sue Gazdo, director of the Republican National Committee’s Membership Service, writes to offer citizen-viewers the priceless opportunity to buy this:

It’s Paddy, “the newest member of the Republican National Committee’s family of elephants.” He “proudly sports his Republican colors with the official Republican National Committee logo.”
She further urges us to “Bring Paddy home as a gift for your favorite Republican, child or grandchild, or to display in your own office.”
For real.

Citizen-viewers wishing to take it to the next level can download SurveillanceSaver and install it on their Macintosh as a screen saver.
Its maker, Mark Frauenfelder, explains that it “shows live images of over 600 network surveillance cameras worldwide. a haunting live soap opera.”
Nice work, Mark.

the world's first weaponized robot
From Wired Blog’s Danger Room (via mikeyv):
They “haven’t fired their weapons yet,” Michael Zecca, the SWORDS program manager, tells DANGER ROOM. “But that’ll be happening soon.”
Once they’ve killed off all the Iraqis, we can program them to run the oil rigs and refineries, and everything will be perfect.
the furry reaper
Strange goings on at a Rhode Island nursing home, according to this account in The Providence Journal:
…Usually about two to four hours before a patient dies, Oscar goes to them. He hops onto the bed, curls up, and stays with them.
The cat’s “mere presence at the bedside is viewed by physicians and nursing-home staff as an almost absolute indicator of impending death, allowing staff members to adequately notify families,” wrote Dosa, in his article for the Journal of Medicine.
All cats are hungry for souls, but only a few know precisely when to get them…and how.
Notice that the ProJo’s web staff slugged the story death_cat.

OK, this is creepy:
MySpace has identified more than 29,000 registered sex offenders on its social network — more than four times the number it claimed to have found in May, according to the North Carolina attorney general’s office.
It may be only 0.04% of their users, but as North Carolina’s attorney general, Roy Cooper, points out:
“That number includes just the predators who signed up using their real names, and not the ones who failed to register or used fake names, or who haven’t been convicted.”

polymash
Polygraph has reappeared in a French version aimed at conservative presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy. How exciting!
The link in the article isn’t working; watch it here.
Mash-up is the second most sincere form of flattery.
